Year 3 have arrived back into Al Muna for another school year in
their bright, new, smart uniforms and settled into their new classes.
We started the year learning lots of new playground games that
we will be able to play with our friends and we had lots of fun doing
this! We used this as the basis of our English work at the start of the
term and worked on writing recounts and instructions.
In Maths we are working on place value and mental calculations
and in Science on Light and Shadows. We have also started working
on our topic of Ancient Egypt and have been thinking about what we would like
to find out about the lives of Ancient Egyptians.
Year 3 have been very busy learning about the Egyptian
Cinderella and using Talk for Writing to help us retell the story. We
have been investigating light and shadows and in computing we have been working
on animations. Our Brain Souq has again opened for business and many of
our children have had the opportunity to challenge and extend their learning
independently. In addition to all of this we are now in our spelling and
reading groups and working hard on improving these skills.

This half term has been very busy for us in Year 3. Two
highlights were our trip to Little World where we took part in a range of
activities which everybody loved – particularly the theatre production!
Our second highlight was Sports Day where all children took part in a range of
indoor and outdoor activities and had the Year 6 sports helpers advising us on
the day. We had some very exciting races/activities but all children were good
sports and took part sensibly and good naturedly.
Next term we are looking forward to our new topic of Around the
Dec 2016 Y3
It has been a very busy and exciting start to 2017 for Year 3!
During our Roots and Shoots week in the first week of term the children were
learning all about recycling and how to save the environment. We were very
lucky to have a visit from The Paperbag Boy who showed us how to make shopping
bags out of old newspapers. We even got the chance to make our own bags! We
linked this theme in with our learning in English and we all wrote our own
diaries about how we had managed to save the world by protecting the
environment and produced amazing posters about recycling and reusing. Our new
topic this term is Around the World and the children have been enjoying
researching lots of amazing facts about countries all over the world to include
in their writing and also to produce their own powerpoint presentations about
their country. In science the children have been learning all about how plants
function and have carried out two exciting investigations to see how seeds grow
into plants and how food colouring can make the leaves of a plant change
colour! Many children in Year 3 are now on the Accelerated Reading scheme and
are enjoying the challenge of the AR quizzes after each book. It is hoped more
children will join the scheme in the coming months as their reading progresses.
As well as having lots of fun with their learning in the classroom, many Year 3
children had the chance to take part in other fun events like the after school
quiz, the family fun cricket morning and the reception for the story writing
competition with Mr Howsen. It's been a very fun filled and busy start to the
Year 3 have continued to have a very
busy spring term. We had a very exciting maths week where we all tried to solve
various mathematical challenges in order to crack a code. In maths we had a
week of maths missions in which we had to plan flights and hotels to various
countries linked to our topic. During art week we worked collaboratively to
create collages of famous world landmarks, we developed our needlework skills
by sewing our own flags of different countries and we painted our own pictures
inspired by the artist Paul Klee. This term we all enjoyed watching Leopard’s
class assembly about what they had learned in our Around the World topic. We
also had another of our times table challenges which the children really
enjoyed. They have loved taking part in these challenges and it is really
helping the children to get better at their times tables. The whole year group
have been busy creating an airport experience as an end of topic collaboration
week. They have worked in groups to produce passports, scanners, security,
check in desks, cafes, shops and on board safety videos. At the end of the week
all the parents will be invited into school with their ‘tickets’ to experience
Al Muna Airways and check in to their destinations!
