This term has been a very busy time for us in Year 5. Our topic this term has been Space which then
has been the main focus for our lessons.
We visited a Planetarium in Abu Dhabi and then we had a mobile
Planetarium visit us in school. We saw
amazing sights in each of them and even tried to name our own
constellations! Our artwork has been
inspired by a well-known NASA artist named Bob McCall and in Literacy we have
written biographies about astronauts and a story in the science fiction genre.
The highlight of the term was definitely our residential
trip to Um Al Quwain in February.
Children had the opportunity to take part in a range of activities which
stretched them both mentally and physically.
In addition to all of that they had loads of fun and came back from the
trip determined to go again next year!
Since our return from the
winter break we have been very busy as usual.
During Roots and Shoots week
we made rugs from recycled plastic
grocery bags and also made documentaries about the founder of Roots and Shoots
Jane Goodall using IPads. This required
us to write a script before we started filming.
We had a marine biologist come into school to speak to us about the
effects of marine pollution here in the Gulf.During the rest of the term
we will be learning all about the diversity of Space.

We have had had a busy term so far in Year 5 and have been working hard. We have also been on two exciting trips to the Emirates Park Zoo and Abu Dhabi Alive. During our Abu Dhabi Alive trip we were able to learn about how to stay fit and healthy by taking part in various sporting activities such as: tennis, trampolining, rock climbing and bowling. Our theme this term has been the Kingdom of Ancient Benin and we have been doing lots of literacy work on this topic including looking at African stories, poems from the region and writing to persuade people about where the Benin bronzes should be kept.In science we have investigated chemical reactions as well as looking at the property of different materials by constructing our own houses to try and make them water proof and wind resistant using a wide range of materials to help us to build them.

In the first term we will be learning all about the ancient Benin Kingdom. To do this we will be researching where Benin is located, what the ancient people did and what the differences are between ancient and modern Benin. In literacy, we will be using our theme to help inspire our writing, as we study fictional writing and stories from other cultures. In numeracy, we will be securing number facts and promoting independent learning through lots of problem solving and exciting investigations. Our science topic for this term is materials and we have lots of fun investigations planned. We have already used our science skills to see which materials would be the most effective at stopping an egg that we dropped smashing. It was great fun, although a little bit messy! Take a look at our photos to see some of the fun things that we have been getting up to so far this term.
